The carbohydrates in our food are digested in the intestine. The end-products of carbohydrate digestion are various sugar, including glucose.
This glucose is absorbed through the Mucous membrane of the intestines to enter the blood-stream. Thus, the concentration of glucose in the blood rises. Insulin makes this glucose available to each and every cell of the body.
If the amount of glucose in the blood is greater than required by the cells, insulin converts it into glycogen and fat, which are stored in the liver (for muscles ), and adipose tissue respectively.
Insulin is also concerned with the metabolism of dietary fats and protein. The end-products of fat digestion are fatty acids. Insulin converts these fatty acids back into fat and stores them in the adipose tissue. Again, insulin prevents the conversion of stored fat into fatty acids. Insulin is also essential for protein-synthesis in the body. If there is a deficiency of insulin, proteins lost due to wear and tear cannot be replaced.
Moreover, when food are digested, they are broken down into the body's basic fuel glucose, a type of sugar. the glucose is absorbed by the blood stream, and is then known as blood glucose or blood sugar. In a person without diabetes, insulin is released by the pancreas after a meal to allow the glucose in the blood to get into the body's cells where it is burned for energy. This brings the level of glucose in the blood back to the normal range.
However, for some reasons not fully known to the experts, in some people, the condition arises when the pancreas fails to produce insulin in sufficient quantity( a defect known as hypo-insulinism), or when the body is unable to use the available insulin. This means that all the glucose in the blood is not fully utilized, and it builds up in the blood stream. This results in high blood sugar which the kidneys have to pass off in the urine, a condition known as 'Glycosuria' in the lay language- diabetes.
In African, Traditionally, there is a way in which diabetes is been tested. Well, depending in the country you are, This trick may not work, but you can still try this tip to know and be sure if you have diabetes without even visiting the doctor for a test.
1. Go outside of the house in an open area or probably beside your garbage trash can. But it has to be outside.
2. Pour a little fresh urine on the ground there.
3. leave the urine there and come back for about 2 to 3 hours.
Observations
